In a quiet Donetsk, militias are building checkpoints: civilians are already getting used to weapons (PHOTO)
Donetsk, June 06 (Navigator, Mikhail Shalyapin) – The last few days have been especially hot in the Donetsk and Lugansk regions bordering Russia. There are fierce clashes at various border checkpoints, with more and more wounded and dead on both sides. Directly in Donetsk itself there is still a calm, the shooting is practically inaudible.

But information about the battles on the border, as well as constantly incoming information about the increasing concentration of troops of the Ukrainian army and National Guard units around Donetsk, does not allow us to relax. Militia fighters and parts of the “Vostok” Battalion are on duty around the clock at checkpoints at the entrance to the city and at key transport hubs.
Today we were able to talk to militia fighters at the checkpoint in the Motel area in front of the bridge. This place connects central Donetsk with remote areas and with the satellite city of Makeyevka.
The bridge near the Motel is a strategic transport hub. Control over it or its loss can play a significant role in the escalation of military confrontation. The militia here are very attentive and concentrated.
I didn’t see anyone idly strolling or openly bored here. A characteristic feature: during the hour that I spent there, local residents came up several times and brought all possible help. Mainly home-cooked food, water, hygiene products. So we can talk about the support of the local population.
Civilians in the checkpoint area move calmly, as if not noticing armed people and armored vehicles, they seem to be used to it. Outwardly everything is calm. But for how long...
