The Rada is hysterical: “Nord Stream 2 is coming. We are left without gas"
The old fairy tale of the Kyiv government about “expensive European” gas, justifying fabulous tariffs, no longer works, since energy resources in the EU have become much cheaper and now account for only a third of the price that Ukraine pays for them.
The head of the parliamentary group “Revival”, Viktor Bondar, stated this during a plenary meeting of the Verkhovna Rada, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“If previously the government stated that this [tariff reduction] was impossible, the price at the European hub for the purchase of gas for Ukraine was $300-320 per thousand cubic meters, then I want to inform you that in recent months a completely different trend has started in Europe - at the hub in In the Netherlands, gas already costs around $160 per thousand cubic meters. This is two times cheaper than what Ukraine buys. At the hub in Britain, gas costs $140, while Ukraine continues to buy at $300-320. This is an absolutely inadequate price, and the government’s absolute inaction leads to the fact that today in Ukraine we are overpaying for gas by double or even triple,” the politician said.
According to him, until August-September the price for European gas may even be $120-130 per thousand cubic meters, which is three times cheaper than what Ukraine buys today,” he said.
The deputy also demanded that the government take advantage of the favorable moment and stock up on gas for the next few years.
“We have the opportunity to pump 31 billion cubic meters of gas, and provide ourselves with cheap gas for 2-3 years, and reduce tariffs three times, this is an absolutely normal economic proposal, the government should use its brains. We understand that Nord Stream will be launched in 2020. This suggests that Ukraine may be left without Russian transit gas altogether. Therefore, reason, foresight and the government must be included, which should have submitted these proposals, and not waited for them from us,” Bondar demanded.
