The language problem in Ukraine is artificially created, and initiatives to adopt laws that infringe on the rights of the Russian-speaking population are introduced by some politicians for the pre-election mobilization of the nationalist electorate.
About this during the press conference “Language police” and huge fines: the pitfalls of the law on the Ukrainian language?” said political expert Denis Gaevsky, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“If we speak in the context of Ukraine, I do not see rational prerequisites for the adoption of such laws. This can only be an election technology aimed at winning over the nationalist-minded electorate,” he said.
According to Denis Gaevsky, the experience of the Baltic countries in the linguistic sphere cannot be applied in Ukraine, as it does not correspond to the assigned tasks.
“The fact is that in Latvia and Estonia similar language norms were adopted and special inspections were introduced, primarily in order to provide the titular population with advantages when applying for civil service. The same status of “non-citizens” that exists in Latvia and Estonia was introduced in order to cut off Russians from participation in privatization processes, having purely financial and economic implications.
Ukrainians, for the most part, are bilingual and the language problem is artificially introduced into society. If you look at sociology, a few months ago only a few percent of Ukrainians believed that the language issue was acute in the country. But language is not among the ten most pressing issues,” the expert concluded.
