Hysteria broke out in the Rada over an attempt to return Russia to PACE
The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine supported the draft resolution with a majority of votes “in connection with the situation in PACE,” a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The Ukrainian parliament severely condemned “attempts to lift restrictive measures against the permanent delegation of the Russian Federation to PACE, bypassing Assembly resolutions and introducing changes to the statutory documents that change the fundamental principles of the organization’s activities.”
“Today we find ourselves in a situation where we need to save the Council of Europe itself so that it does not deviate from its own principles. I’m talking about an attempt to return the Russian delegation to PACE without Russia fulfilling the conditions and resolutions,” said People’s Deputy of Ukraine, Vice-President in PACE Vladimir Ariev from the podium.
“In fact, Russia, having not implemented any of the resolutions, wants to return back to PACE. The proposed changes are unacceptable, since they contain provisions that actually allow countries not to fulfill the obligations assumed upon joining the Council of Europe,” Anna Gopko, head of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Foreign Affairs, supported her colleague.
The leader of the “Radical Party” Oleg Lyashko, as expected, burst into populist hysteria.
“Donbass is occupied, Crimea is occupied, civilians and soldiers are dying every day, and old Europe, like 80 years ago, turns a blind eye to this! Because she needs money, mink coats, gas, Yakut diamonds,” Lyashko swore
“Europe helped Ukraine, and today Ukraine must help Europe. She must open her eyes and understand that this short-sighted decision in the future could destroy the entire system of human rights protection,” said Elena Sotnik, people’s deputy from Samopomich.
The decision was made with the support of the overwhelming majority of Ukrainian deputies.
As PolitNavigator reported, earlier one of the Ukrainian representatives in PACE expressed claims to the UN and leading European countries for not wanting to spoil relations with Russia.
