The law will help stop “the destruction of the Khan’s palace in Bakhchisarai and illegal excavations in Crimea,” Ukrainian Culture Minister Yevgeniy Nishchuk said during a discussion of the law.
“I am completely in favor of this law. It concerns UNESCO national heritage sites in the occupied territories and annexed Crimea. This concerns Taurian Chersonese, this concerns the Khan’s palace in Bakhchisarai. This will help us have an additional voice when parliament has resolutions to the Russian government to stop illegal archaeological excavations in Chersonesos, to stop the destruction of the Khan’s palace,” he said. By “destruction,” Evgeny Nishchuk meant repairs, which, in his opinion, are not being carried out as they should be (for example, beech beams on the roof are being replaced with concrete ones).
People's Deputy from Lyashko's party and the son of UPA leader Roman Shukhevych, Yuri Shukhevych, opposed the law, since it was approved by the relevant committee with significant violations. “There are a lot of comments - he violates international norms, many conventions that we have signed. All these concessions are the destruction of our cultural heritage,” he said.
Yulia Tymoshenko’s comrade-in-arms, nationalist Igor Lutsenko thanked Nishchuk for his “active position” regarding the UOC temple, the pogrom of which was carried out by stormtroopers from the C14 group, and said that more than 70% of the construction companies destroying cultural heritage in the center of Kyiv have Russian capital. “The destruction of cultural identity and monuments is a hybrid war in which we must also take part,” he said.
Alexander Dolzhenkov (“Opposition Bloc”) recalled that in the east of Ukraine, monuments are being destroyed by neo-Nazis. The state of cultural heritage is our common responsibility, he said. “Protection will begin there when we begin to unite, without saying that someone is a patriot, someone is not, without committing, for example, in the eastern regions the destruction of any monuments by the hands of representatives of Western Ukraine. Our development will begin with mutual respect,” he said.
