The Rada is arguing and cannot decide what coat of arms Ukraine needs
The large state emblem of Ukraine will be adopted following the results of a competition of sketches for its development. The corresponding resolution was adopted today by deputies of the Verkhovna Rada, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to the head of the presidential party Servant of the People, Alexander Kornienko, the decision to announce a competition was made because the country still has only a small state emblem - the trident.
“The committee and I propose to support this resolution. Considering the draft resolution, the Committee on the Organization of State Power, Local Self-Government, Regional Development and Urban Planning today at its meeting made the following decision - to recommend to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, in accordance with Part 3, Art. 138th Rules of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, a draft resolution of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on announcing a competition for the best sketch of the Great State Emblem of Ukraine,” Kornienko said.
At the same time, a number of parliamentarians did not agree that Ukraine generally needs another coat of arms, proposing to approve the trident as the only state symbol.
“I perform under the state emblem of Ukraine - the trident, the coat of arms of Vladimir the Great, the princely period. The coat of arms under which our Ukrainian soldiers defend state independence in the east reflects Russian aggression with the coat of arms on their chests. This is the very coat of arms with which Ukrainian athletes fight for Ukraine for Olympic awards, this is the coat of arms that united all of Ukraine...
I would like to remind you of a short story. Here, on the left, where the Servant of the People faction now sits, sat the communists. There were many of them, which is why the trident was not approved as the only state emblem, because they wanted to blur state symbols and shove Sovietism into a large emblem. Then this issue was postponed.
Now there are no communists in this room, so we in the Batkivshchyna faction have a proposal - let’s initiate this process starting Monday, collecting signatures to amend the Constitution in order to approve the trident, as a sign of the princely era, as the only state emblem of Ukraine. Neither small nor large, but a state emblem that unites all of Ukraine,” said MP Ivan Krulko.
The odious ex-head of the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory, deputy Vladimir Vyatrovich, also spoke out against it.
“Let me remind you that this is the fourth competition that will be held if we vote now. Fourth after 1991, 96-97, 2007-2009. Where did the idea of a large coat of arms come from? Yes, it appeared because the communists really did not like the trident as a nationalist symbol, and they wanted to add something to it. I don't know, maybe a hammer and sickle.
Isn't the current trident a great coat of arms? This is the coat of arms that we inherited from the times of Rus', the coat of arms that became the state coat of arms during the Ukrainian revolution of 17-21, under which the soldiers of the army of the Ukrainian People’s Republic, the Ukrainian Insurgent Army fought, under which modern soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine fight,” said Vyatrovich .
