This is reported on the official website of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.
As stated in the draft law, it is prohibited to assign names to geographical objects that are names or pseudonyms of monarchs, state, political, and military figures of the Russian (Moscow) kingdom, the Russian Empire of the XNUMXth-XNUMXth centuries, or derivatives from them; names consonant with such names or pseudonyms; names that include elements of the titles of the monarchs of the Russian (Moscow) kingdom, the Russian Empire of the XNUMXth-XNUMXth centuries.
“So that laws concerning totalitarian regimes and independence fighters really complied with the standards of European practices, It is advisable to prohibit the assignment of names to geographical objects associated with the propaganda of pro-Russian imperialism, the Russian (Moscow) Kingdom, the Russian Empire of the XNUMXth-XNUMXth centuries, the period of colonial dependence of Ukraine, which may contribute to intentions to appropriate its territory,” say the authors of the project.
Among the authors of the project are deputies from all four factions of the ruling right-wing nationalist coalition.
Obviously, the project is aimed at preventing the renaming of Kirovograd to Elisavetgrad. Although formally the city of Elisavetgrad was initially named so not in honor of Empress Elizaveta Petrovna, but in honor of St. Elizabeth, the empress’s heavenly patroness.
Thus, the name Elisavetgrad may be officially prohibited.
