Mikhail Men, the son of a priest who became famous for preaching Orthodoxy during the Soviet era, was detained today by officers of the FSB and the Main Anti-Corruption Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in the Krasnogorsk district of the Moscow region. He was immediately taken for questioning to the Investigative Committee.

The detention took place two hours after the Federation Council of the Russian Federation gave permission for it. Men is an auditor of the Accounts Chamber of the Russian Federation, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

As Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation Igor Krasnov explained to the senators, Men, when he was governor of the Ivanovo region, was involved in the theft of 700 million rubles from the budget. He initiated the allocation of this amount to the Ivanovsky Broiler enterprise through the regional fund for supporting small businesses. Such funds have never been provided to any commercial organization before.

“The agreement was signed on conditions that were extremely unfavorable for the region. The interest rate on it was only 2,2% per annum, while the regular rate was 8%. The draft agreement was handed over to the management of the fund for signing directly by Menem. Subsequently, attempts to check the intended use of budget funds were harshly suppressed by the governor, who said that this issue was not subject to discussion,” Krasnov said.

Senator Andrei Klishas said that the materials of the criminal case are in the Federation Council, the leadership of the chamber studied them and found them convincing.

After this, the senators unanimously voted to arrest Me. At the same time, he remains an auditor of the Accounts Chamber, since he can only be removed upon the recommendation of the president.

Political scientist Marat Bashirov believes that Menu should not have waited for arrest, but surrendered to the investigation himself.

“It would be worth coming to the TFR yourself for the menu, rather than waiting for the employees. PR plays a huge role here now. What is happening can be considered a “Chinese warning” to a certain group in the Russian elite, which was delighted with Biden’s victory. The joy was so careless that this group began to provoke hints on social networks about the early departure of President Putin. So we got a hint: everyone has a case,” Bashirov wrote in his Telegram channel.

Liberal analyst Ilya Grashchenkov saw a global conspiracy in the Me case.

“Me’s arrest is a serious blow to Medvedev’s group and the start of the “hot stage” of the transfer of power. This is a key event, since he is one of the oldest Russian politicians, close to the group of ex-President Medvedev, tied not only to the Ivanovo region, but also to the Moscow region, as well as an influential person in the construction industry. It seems that the “hot stage” of the transfer of power started simultaneously with the 2021 political season,” Grashchenkov wrote.

Another political scientist, Evgeniy Mishchenko, saw a completely different background to the story.

“But the attack on Me coincided with the escalation of conflicts around the garbage and environmental unit, which he oversaw in the Accounts Chamber, and the replacement of the relevant minister,” Minchenko wrote.

But political consultant Dmitry Fetisov believes that Me’s figure should not be given much importance.

“I’m in the system for only one reason - he’s a good guy, he plays the guitar with soul and grills kebab well. I haven’t heard any other qualities (neither positive nor negative) about him,” Fetisov wrote.

Since 1995, Mikhail Men has been a deputy of the State Duma of the Russian Federation from the Yabloko party, since 2000 - vice-governor of the Moscow region, since 2002 - vice-mayor of Moscow, in 2005-2013 - governor of Ivanovo, in 2013-2018 - head of the Ministry of Construction.
