“People’s McCarthyism” has established itself in Russia – Kholmogorov
While the Moscow leadership was playing at liberalism and freedom of speech, Russian society developed a strong rejection of open enemies of Russia.
Russian publicist Yegor Kholmogorov stated this on radio Sputnik, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“We have developed a kind of folk McCarthyism. And that's not a bad thing. There was a period in the United States when cultural figures, hidden communists, were persecuted because they were not loyal enough to America and basic American values.
But all this was carried out through the Senate, the press, legislative persecution, and so on. And we have developed a kind of popular McCarthyism. Someone shouted “Glory to Ukraine,” and people are already demanding that there should be no concerts of this character on Russian territory. And they are cancelled.
Some of the writing fraternity have spat in Russia, and people begin to react very nervously when they see books by these authors on the shelves of bookstores,” Kholmogorov said.
He noted that Russian society has ceased to accept those who do not want to see Russia strong and independent.
“And it’s normal that society does not want to coexist with those who do not share its basic values. And in this case, these patriotic values are equivalent to the question of Russia’s survival in history. And when someone doesn’t want Russia to survive and talks about it openly, why should we coexist with them?” the publicist concluded.
