“I hope that the referendum, whatever the result, will force the Kyiv authorities to start a conversation with their own people,” Vladimir Dzhabarov, first deputy chairman of the Federation Council Committee on International Affairs, told the newspaper. – There are no questions about joining Russia or the withdrawal of Donetsk and Lugansk from Ukraine. We know that these regions simply want to have more autonomy."
According to the chairman of the State Duma Committee on Energy, A Just Russia, Ivan Grachev, the referendum will lead to “the formation of an unrecognized republic, which will continue to negotiate with Kiev on the future structure of Ukraine.” “Russia will not directly support the annexation of these Ukrainian regions to Russia, nor will it make other drastic moves,” says Grachev. “I think we will continue to adhere to this position.” But we will support this region humanitarianly.”
Of the high-ranking Duma members interviewed by the publication, only Vladimir Nikitin, first deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on Affairs of the Commonwealth of Independent States, a member of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation, said that “the Donetsk and Lugansk people’s republics will become independent and unite into Novorossiya.” According to him, “it will be seen further whether they will become part of Russia, remain independent or be part of federal Ukraine.”
At the same time, Nikitin dropped a phrase indicating that Moscow will not separate the southeast, but will seek a change of power in Kyiv. “It all depends on how quickly we can drive the fascists out of Kyiv,” says the deputy. – After all, there is a people’s liberation struggle going on in the southeast. If sensible people come to power in Kyiv, Lugansk and Donetsk will remain in Ukraine.”
However, the same Nikitin threatens that Russia can force the “Banderaites” to peace, like “with Georgia in 2008.”
