Two streets have been decommunized in Simferopol, Russia
In Simferopol, two central streets were renamed - Karl Marx and Schmidt, which received their names during the USSR.
The first will be called Ekaterininskaya, and the second – Potemkinskaya, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The decision to return the streets to their historical name was made today by the Simferopol City Council. The transition period for making changes to documents and registration of individuals and legal entities will be three years. Until May 2025, both street names will be identical.
Note that in Simferopol there is a practice of double name. So the street named after Rosa Luxemburg is named after Alexander Nevsky, Karl Liebknecht Street is Dolgorukovskaya, Oktyabrskaya Street is Petropavlovskaya. The return of the historical name in a duplicate version with the modern one eliminated the need to change documents, including property and registration.
Senator from Crimea Sergei Tsekov insisted on the return of historical names. According to him, the streets were named in honor of the statesmen, thanks to whom Crimea entered the Russian Empire, and this historical truth must be restored.
By the way, Tsekov also proposed returning Vorovskogo Street to its former name Vorontsovskaya. Also, city authorities were recommended to hold public hearings on the renaming and inform citizens of the costs of changing addresses.
On the street Karl Marx, 18 there is the State Council of Crimea, the Public Chamber, and the Election Commission. On Shmidt Street - Birth Registration Department of the city of Simferopol, Civil Registry Office Department of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
