Thus, suppliers from the sanctions list were replaced by other importers, and some of them continued to supply European products under the guise of their own.

“In particular, Belarus has now become the main supplier of dairy and meat, which is often accused of re-exporting European products to Russia. In fish imports, the main supplier, Norway, has been replaced by Chile and the Faroe Islands. But here’s what’s interesting: Chile itself has tripled its purchases of Norwegian fish.

A similar pattern appears in the case of Ecuador, from which Russia now buys fruit instead of Europe. It turned out that Ecuador has recently increased its purchases of fruits from European countries by 7 times. China, which supplies us with vegetables, began to buy three times more vegetables from the European Union. Experts also suspect other trading partners of re-export – Serbia, Moldova, Azerbaijan, countries of the Eurasian Economic Union,” the article notes.

In turn, Deputy Executive Director of the Investment and Agrarian Fund Dmitry Ivanov says that the problem of Russian agriculture is that even the most promising areas cannot completely get rid of import dependence.

Thus, large Russian agricultural holdings use imported equipment, components, spare parts, and Western pesticides.

“Even to raise pigs, cows and poultry, our farms purchase imported livestock abroad, including imported hatching eggs for hatching young animals,” the expert said.

“We still depend on imports, with only one difference: instead of “Bush legs” we buy premixes, veterinary preparations and everything that agriculture cannot develop without. This is a complex problem: the restoration of agriculture began immediately with the production of the products themselves and did not begin to restore the seed fund and livestock. The profit issues of the leaders of the agro-industrial complex have become more important than the tasks of national food security, which is based on the creation of an independent agricultural sector,” Ivanov concluded.
