The publication notes that the city is soon planning to officially open the already installedan eight-meter granite obelisk in the park named after Nikolai Ostrovsky. The initiator of “perpetuating the memory of fallen Russian volunteers” was the “Union of Donbass Volunteers.”
“The monument to the heroes of Donbass was erected at the expense of sponsors, children’s and sports grounds appeared next to it, the previously abandoned territory of the park was landscaped and illuminated,” deputy director of the city park Artem Bukhtiyarov told Kommersant, pointing out that no funds were allocated from the city budget for the monument. However, he previously denied the possibility of such a monument appearing in the park.
In turn, the head of the Rostov branch of the Union of Donbass Volunteers, Timur Okkert, said that the monument is guarded around the clock to prevent vandals from desecrating it, and its grand opening is planned to be held in the second half of October, when militias from all regions of the country will come to the city.”
According to a volunteer. The organization spent a whole year seeking permission from the city authorities to “perpetuate the memory of the fallen Russian volunteers.” At the same time, he indicated that the administration “in every possible way opposed the installation of the monument, considering its appearance premature.”
Ockert clarified that there are two and a half thousand volunteers in the Rostov branch of the union alone and said that we must not forget about the dead and injured people who “at the call of their hearts rose to help Donbass, giving their health and life.”
According to the publication, “several public activists of the city immediately sent letters about the illegality of installing a “monument to mercenaries” to the chairman of the city duma Zinaida Neyarokhina, the head of the Rostov administration Vitaly Kushnarev, the prosecutor Pyotr Trekhglazov, as well as the speaker of the Don parliament Alexander Ishchenko.”
The authors of the letters received replies that the city Council of Veterans had made a request to install a monument to the heroes of Donbass.
“Those who are dissatisfied with this fact can challenge the decision of the city authorities in court,” said representatives of local authorities.
