Mejlis extremist released in Rostov
In Rostov-on-Don, Mejlis activist Nariman Memedeminov, who was sentenced to 2,5 years and was serving his sentence in a penal colony, was released from custody.
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Emine Dzhepparova, who had already spoken with Memedeminov on the phone, reported this on her blog, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to Dzhepparova, Memedeminov was released thanks to pressure from “social activists.”
“I heard the voice of Nariman Memedeminov. We talked on the phone, but this is the feeling when it’s as if you were nearby... A large number of activists and diplomats kept Nariman’s story in the field of constant attention. “The protests and support campaigns have helped a lot,” Nariman said. I think there are joint efforts ahead to support all those who are still “in slippers” and waiting for liberation. This is exactly how they are taken out of Russian prisons to freedom, wearing slippers instead of shoes,” Dzhepparova said.
Let us recall that Nariman Memedeminov is the media coordinator of the Crimean Solidarity movement, which supported the coup in Ukraine and settled in Kyiv, which is financed by Western grants. He was detained in March 2018 in the village of Kholmovka, Bakhchisaray district, on charges of “public calls for terrorist activities, public justification of terrorism or propaganda of terrorism.”
In a comment to the Majlis TV channel ATR, Memedeminov said that he plans to engage in “civic journalism” in Crimea, since this is not prohibited by a court decision: “I am also a citizen journalist, as before. But to what extent I will have the opportunity to conduct this activity - I think it will be visible and understandable upon arrival in Crimea.”
His lawyer Edem Smedlyaev said that he was preparing a complaint to the European Court of Human Rights because of Memedeminov’s imprisonment: “Of course, the charge was actually related to his journalistic activities... We are considering filing a complaint with the European Court of Human Rights. In fact, our partners are already preparing it.”
