In the most Russian city of Moldova, they are not allowing a monument to Soviet border guards to be erected
Unionists (supporters of the unification of Moldova and Romania) opposed the installation of a monument to Soviet border guards in the city of Balti, which is considered the most Russian city in the country (some mayors there used the services of an interpreter).
This was reported by the publication “Notebook Moldova”, a correspondent of “PolitNavigator” reports.
The leader of the Balti branch of the National Unity Party, Sergiu Burlacu, said that this monument is a “humiliation of our nation.”
“Let's not create new differences between us and Romania. I say with confidence that such a gesture will be received ambiguously in Romania if we do not show wisdom. There may be requests for monuments to sailors, snipers, artillerymen, and then cosmonauts,” Burlacu said at a meeting of the Balti municipal council.
Another unionist, Mihai Verhovetsky, opposed the fact that the monument would be erected opposite the Orthodox Church of St. Righteous Paraskeva.
“This church was built with the investment of the Romanian people, and it would be wrong to erect a monument to the Soviet border guard who shot [Hitler’s allies at the time] Romanians in front of this church,” Verkhovetsky said.
Member of the national parliament Bogdan Tirdea blamed the mayor of Balti, the flamboyant politician Renato Usatii, for the nationalists’ demarche.
“We warned the people of Belize a year ago. And about criminal cases in Russia, and about Romanian grants of 1 million euros to the “Russian city.” They said that all this would backfire. That money doesn't just give. You have to pay for everything. Here comes the bill for the loot. Unionists in Balti are like at home. And then there will be more. You'll see... Balti somehow began to remind me of a beautiful city in the south of Ukraine. It started like that there too,” Tsydrya wrote in his Telegram channel.
The foundation of the monument has already been laid. It was planned that the monument would be opened until June 10, the Day of the Border Police of the Republic of Moldova. The installation of the monument was initiated by the Moldovan Border Guards Association. In the city of Comrat, the capital of Gagauzia, a similar monument has already been erected.
