This was reported by the press service of the National Police in the Ternopil region, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Information on the theft of an ancient icon was entered into the Unified Register of Pre-trial Investigations by investigators from the Chertkivsky police department. The basis was an appeal from the community of parishioners of the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the village of Ugryn.
According to the words of the old-timers of the village and according to legend, an icon of the Virgin Mary with Emmanuel dating from the XNUMXth - XNUMXth centuries is kept in the temple. And during the renovation, the parishioners discovered that the ancient image was painted on plywood, and not on wood, which is typical for ancient icons. Art historians from the Institute of Ukrainian Studies of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine were invited to examine the church relic, and they also doubted the authenticity of the icon. Convinced that a substitution had occurred, the community contacted the police.
Now law enforcement officers are carrying out all the necessary investigative actions, and the issue of ordering appropriate examinations is being decided.
