Parliamentary elections postponed in Serbia
Parliamentary elections in Serbia will take place on April 26 or May 3, 2020, and not in March, as previously thought.
This was reported by the Evening News publication, citing the progress of negotiations between the authorities and the opposition.
The decision was made at the proposal of representatives of the European Union. It is expected that the postponement of the election date will allow the adoption of a number of laws to improve the electoral system.
The head of the EU delegation, Tania Fajon, said the agreement to postpone the elections will increase citizens' confidence in the electoral process, which will become fairer and more democratic.
Another Brussels envoy, Knut Fleckenstein, let slip the real reason for the changes - thanks to them, the opposition will not boycott the elections.
“I hope those who are in favor of this will change their minds,” he said.
Representatives of the opposition Union for Serbia announced on Friday evening that they did not want to run.
In addition, as a result of the negotiations, a decision was made to elect five new members of the body regulating the work of electronic media. It is stated that Parliament needs to form an oversight committee to monitor the behavior of candidates and the media during the electoral process.
