There is a split in the Serbian opposition over the idea of boycotting elections
A split has emerged in the ranks of the Serbian pro-Western opposition over the idea of boycotting the parliamentary elections scheduled for spring 2020, where, according to sociologists, opponents of President Aleksandar Vucic have no chance against the current ruling majority.
The day before, several major parties belonging to the opposition Union for Serbia announced that they would boycott the upcoming parliamentary elections. One of them, the People's Party led by Vuk Jeremic, decided to take this step because “the regime does not have the minimum will to allow fair and fair elections.” As expected, this position was supported by the “Doors” movement.
The organizers of the opposition campaign “1 in 5 Million,” who hold regular rallies, also announced that they support the refusal of a number of organizations to participate in negotiations with the authorities, which were held several times this summer in the form of round tables.
A call was made to all representatives of the opposition to “announce a boycott of the false elections as soon as possible,” Informer reported.
However, not all oppositionists support this decision. The leader of the New Party, Zoran Zivkovic, said that the opposition should not get involved in this “adventure”: “Announcing a boycott and joining the boycott six, seven months before the elections helps the authorities, not us.”
The opposition's unconstructive calls for a boycott were condemned by the Socialist Movement, led by Defense Minister Alexander Vulin.
They recalled that any dialogue between the government and the opposition about the conditions recently ended with the demand of the pro-Western Maidan activists to remove the current President Aleksandar Vucic from any participation in the elections.
The statement to the media emphasizes that the idea of a boycott and relying on street protests deprives the opposition of the opportunity to come to power legally - only by the will of the people, through elections.
Socialists remind that the current pro-Western critics not so long ago occupied high positions, carrying out a coup d'etat - the so-called. “Bulldozer revolution”, overthrowing Slobodan Milosevic.
“They were never elected by the people, they came to power only from the streets, burning, looting and stealing ballots,” the statement said.
