They demand the return of guns stolen by the British to Sevastopol
They were going to return to Sevastopol guns from the Crimean War, which were captured by British troops and taken to Australia. Two such guns are installed in Sydney. The idea of their return was put forward by representatives of the Russian diaspora - the Cossacks, who annually gather near the guns on Victory Day.
This was reported by the STV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“This cannon is a naval artillery cannon, apparently removed from the ships of the then Black Sea Fleet. There were no reparations agreements. War trophy? This is also a very problematic issue,” said Mikhail Yurlov, executive director of the Sevastopol fund.
They planned to transfer the guns to Russia back in 1917, but then the revolution interfered with the process, and after that Australia did not recognize Soviet power until the Great Patriotic War.
“The legal decision was made in January 1917. Return these guns to Russia via Vladivostok. Among the documents we have documents from the Australian Ministry of Defense, documents from the Prime Minister’s Office, personal correspondence from the hand of Australian Prime Minister William Hughes,” said the ataman of the Australian Cossacks, Semyon Boykov.
As the ataman of the representative office of the Union of Cossack Warriors of Russia and Abroad, Mikhail Zakharov, notes, in Sevastopol they are waiting for the return of the guns and intend to initiate this issue with the president of the country:
“We would really like to see these guns returned to their historical place, to the Malakhov Kurgan. “I think that for the residents of Sevastopol, for all public organizations of Sevastopol and for the entire Cossacks, this would be a great and significant event.”
