Metropolitan Lazar of Simferopol and Crimea, in his address to believers, noted that this icon was the protector of Russian soldiers during the Crimean War, but disappeared in the first years of Soviet power and was considered lost.
The image was purchased from one of the Moscow collectors in 2008 by the head of the “Collection of Russian Icons” Andrei Bokarev.
The Sevastopol image of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God is revered as the “Sovereign Intercessor” of Russia. It was consecrated by Metropolitan Philaret to be sent to the active army during the Crimean War. This listing is the only one that reproduces every detail of the original.
From Chersonesos the image was transported to the Prince Vladimir Cathedral - the tomb of the admirals on the city hill, from where it was carried in a religious procession to the Count's pier. The return of the icon coincided with the anniversary of the exodus of the Russian army from Crimea in the 20s.
