Sevastopol State University has begun developing liquid breathing technologies that allow breathing under water. Acting spoke about this. Vice-Rector of Northern State University for Research and Innovation Yuri Gimpilevich.

“This technology will make it possible to save people, for example, in case of accidents on underwater vessels at great depths. It is impossible to quickly raise the crew in such cases: decompression sickness develops and the blood “boils.” It takes hours to lift, otherwise the person will not survive. The technology allows breathing using a special liquid that is pumped into the lungs,” said Gimpilevich.
Financing is provided by the state Fund for Advanced Research under the Military-Industrial Commission and the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation. To participate in the project, a special laboratory “Experimental life support systems for biological objects” was created.
“The idea of liquid breathing was put forward quite a long time ago, but was not brought to any practical implementation. The topic is medical, but there are also technical aspects that our university will deal with. We have entered into a confidentiality agreement. Not everything can be told,” says Gimpilevich.
He believes that liquid breathing has great prospects in medicine.
“If a child is born with a pathology associated with the lungs, as experiments have shown, he can be transferred to liquid breathing - pumping a liquid that is saturated with oxygen. At the same time, the child lives, and then he can be slowly brought out of this state when the pathology is eliminated,” said Gimpilevich.
