Earlier, the executive director of the Russian Military Historical Society (RVIO), Vladislav Kononov, announced that the “Monument of Reconciliation” would be installed in Sevastopol at Cape Khrustalny, and not in Kerch, as previously planned.
They plan to open the monument this fall, on National Unity Day. According to Kononov, “the monument will be a 25-meter stele, on top of which a figure symbolizing the Motherland will be installed. At its foot, the Red Army soldier and the lieutenant of the imperial army will appear as sons with their heads bowed. Between them, an eternal fire will burn from a bowl in the form of an olive wreath.”
Some opponents of the appearance of a new monument are guided by ideological motives, remaining irreconcilable “Reds”. Other Sevastopol residents are confused by the cyclopean size of the new monument.
In March, the public of Sevastopol already opposed the installation of a 10-meter-high monument to Grigory Potemkin in the city center on the initiative of the State Duma of the Russian Federation.
