“The battery was included in the relevant register back in 2004. Indeed, having arrived here, we see that this is simply barbaric. In fact, this can be classified as a crime,” said social activist Ivan Komelov.
The government of Sevastopol also responded to the signal. A working group headed by Deputy Director of the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning Sergei Demushkin went to the site.
“We see the fact itself. We recorded it. The main thing for us is to find who did this work and who will bear responsibility for it. Because, frankly speaking, punishment can reach criminal liability for such “arbitrariness.” Now the main task is to involve law enforcement agencies in the case, including to find the perpetrators,” Demushkin said.
The problem of saving the 15th battery, built at the beginning of the 20th century, has been raised more than once. But this did not help protect the historical site from dense development. The debris around the battery grew in proportion to the surrounding residential construction, the apotheosis of which was the latest construction.
“In the last days of the second defense of Sevastopol, heavy fighting took place on the territory of the battery. About a hundred Soviet soldiers from different units of the retreating troops were surrounded. There is a legend that the Nazis dealt with these soldiers especially cruelly, not even allowing them to bury the bodies of the dead defenders of the city. Citizens were able to put the fighters to rest only after the liberation of the city, in a mass grave. She is located next to the last frontier of the heroes,” the report said.
