This was stated today at a press conference in Moscow by the President of the Center for Strategic Studies “Russia - Islamic World” Shamil Sultanov.

“The situation is reaching a catastrophic stage. The breakdown of the agreement between the United States and Russia shows that the great powers are not able to influence this conflict, which is becoming self-propelled and inert. The importance of regional and local participants is increasing. This means that any agreements are impossible,” Sultanov said.

He believes that the aggravated international situation increases the risk of direct involvement of great powers in the conflict.

“The West’s rhetoric towards Russia has escalated. The West is already accusing the Kremlin of complicity in war crimes. From the US point of view, any victory for Damascus will negatively impact Hillary Clinton's prospects. The Pentagon is increasing its influence on decision-making. There are groups in Russia that believe that there is now an opportunity in Syria to defeat the forces supported by the West. The Third World War may begin in Syria,” Sultanov said.

Let us recall that on September 9, Russia and the United States entered into bilateral agreements aimed at resuming the ceasefire in Syria. However, on September 17, the situation around the negotiations became tense again after aircraft from the US-led coalition attacked the positions of the country's government army. On September 19, a humanitarian convoy came under fire near Aleppo. The United States blamed the Russian Aerospace Forces for this.

The UN Security Council held a meeting tonight on the situation in Aleppo. The United Kingdom, the United States and France, who convened an emergency meeting, devoted their speeches to accusations against Damascus and Moscow, encountering a sharp response.
