“I hope that this serious discussion, which began with Putin’s article and then continued with Medvedev’s article, will continue. And there will be some new thoughts that will force the sane part, there are very few of them, at least the Ukrainian expert community, I’m not even talking about the authorities, to somehow reconsider their stupid views that the whole world is with us, and we have nothing it will be,” Pogrebinsky said.

At the same time, he assessed the prospects for Russian-Ukrainian relations rather skeptically.

“I don’t see any prospects, at least in my lifetime, for Ukraine to turn into a friendly state; it will still be a state that will treat Russia with some suspicion, distrust - this will remain for a very long time. You can live with this, but for this you need some kind of sane idea,” the expert added.

“I have doubts about two questions,” journalist and TV presenter Vladimir Solovyov entered the discussion. “The first is when you talk about Ukraine as a state, and the second is when you talk about a negative attitude.”

“In the history of those lands that are now part of Ukraine, there were so many stages when it seemed like rabid enemies forever, and as soon as the Bolsheviks appeared there, it turned out that they had been waiting for them for so long that they were ready to find the last reptile themselves and crush them with their own once again becoming proletarian hands. Therefore, for some reason, the speed of change in the public mood in Ukraine is amazing.

These lands were collected within one quasi-statehood only in the presence of a large real statehood. It is not Russia’s fault that in thirty years these lands have tended to disperse,” Solovyov recalled.

“They can strive for anything,” Pogrebinsky objected. – But to imagine that the preservation of the Ukrainian state as a separate entity is possible only by repulsion. I don’t see any prospects for maintaining even just friendly relations. It is important for us, including colleagues in the Russian expert community, to realize that we need to achieve a pragmatic version of relations in which there is Ukrainian interest - economic, cultural and others, which will provide an opportunity for our countries to interact.”

“In fact, what you are saying would have become possible if Ukraine had become part of the large Russian state, then it would have worked,” the political scientist added.

“Note that it’s not me who’s saying this, but you,” the TV presenter noted.
