The US is preparing a new dirty trick against Russia
The US anti-Russian sanctions list does not include any Russian media, but this can be changed by exploiting loopholes in American legislation.
The head of the International Civil Liberties Foundation, Alexander Goldfarb, stated this during the VI Free Russia Forum, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“It turns out that not a single Russian media outlet is the target of sanctions, not to mention specific figures of Russian propaganda. This happens because freedom of speech exists and the American Constitution prohibits any measures that would restrict freedom of speech. The question comes down to legally justifying why sanctions against, say, Channel One do not fall under the protection of the First Amendment on the principle of freedom of speech.
We worked on this issue and came to a formula that we will now lobby in Congress. The fact is that the American Civil Code allows the media to be held liable for what they broadcast, if it can be proven that it was a deliberate lie, malicious slander. And we want to transfer this principle from American civil law to the topic of sanctions, so that the media sector is included in the sectoral sanctions bill, which is currently being considered by Congress and the Senate. There is a petition on this topic,” he said.
Let us note that the non-profit organization International Civil Liberties Foundation, headed by Alexander Goldfarb, was founded in 2000 by the now deceased fugitive Russian oligarch Boris Berezovsky. The foundation's headquarters are located in New York.
