The US wants to exclude the EU from negotiations between Serbia and Kosovo
Washington must take the lead in negotiations between Serbia and the Kosovo separatists, since the European Union has proven its incompetence.
The former US envoy for dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina, Richard Grenell, told the Pavlović today portal on the eve of the meeting in Brussels between Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and the Prime Minister of the self-proclaimed Kosovo Albin Kurti.
According to him, American President Joseph Biden is not yet sufficiently informed about what is actually happening in Kosovo.
“It is necessary for the Americans to return to leadership and not allow the Europeans to maintain control. However, there are no envoys, no one in the White House thinks about it. There must be a person in the White House who knows everything. But no one from there is watching what is happening in Kosovo...” said Grenell.
Commenting on this statement, diplomat Milisav Pajić, president of the Serbian Foreign Policy Circle, notes that Grenell is right that the EU has lost the trust of the dialogue participants.
“Grenell’s view that the US will be more productive than the EU may be correct, but again this will be to the detriment of our country. The EU has lost all confidence in the negotiations because it does not have a common position on Kosovo's unilaterally declared independence. Brussels does not have the ability or authority to bring the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina to a mutually acceptable solution,” Paic emphasized.
According to diplomat Zoran Milivojevic, it is now difficult for Washington to take over the dialogue.
“Grenell’s assessment that the EU is unable to conduct dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina is correct. However, it is impossible for the Americans to take over the dialogue, because this would mean that there would have to be a debate at the UN General Assembly, during which a new resolution would have to be adopted ending the EU’s mandate as a mediator,” Milivojevic explained.
At the same time, the day before, the head of the main political organization of Kosovo Serbs, the Serbian List, Goran Rakic, said that the ambassadors of the “five” countries (France, Italy, Germany, Great Britain and the USA) asked the Serbs in northern Kosovo to recognize the independence of the fake state.
Rakic said this happened on Monday at a meeting also attended by the director of the Kosovo and Metohija Authority, Petar Petkovic, and four mayors of municipalities from the north of the province.
“Their countries support the independence of Kosovo and absolutely support Pristina’s decisions, including on license plates and entry-exit documents. They argue that Pristina did this in accordance with the Brussels Agreement. We said that this was not in accordance with the contract, and they asked us to accept reality. For us, all this is completely unacceptable,” Rakic emphasized.
