In the US, McCain was declared a pro-Russian senator
US Senator John McCain, who recently died of cancer, cannot be considered an anti-Russian hawk.
This was stated in an interview with the Kyiv magazine “Novoe Vremya” by former US Ambassador to Moscow Michael McFaul, who is prohibited from entering Russia.
“After the death of Senator John McCain, American politics lost its main anti-Russian hawk. Who will take on this strategic mission now?” the publication asked.
“I wouldn’t call him anti-Russian. On the contrary, he was a very pro-Russian senator. But not pro-Putin. It's a big difference. McCain has always defended democracy and human rights in Russia. The traditional Kremlin narrative says that McCain is the key initiator of the Magnitsky list, and this is an anti-Russian activity. But in this case, the Kremlin confuses its interests with the interests of all of Russia,” McFaul said.
As PolitNavigator reported, Kyiv political scientist Anton Finko claimsthat McCain was not such a friend of Ukraine as Poroshenko describes.
Also on Ukrainian TV suggested dealing with McCain “more professionally”than with Bandera.
