The United States is concerned about statements by Ukrainian politicians about NATO
There is a threat that Ukraine will become a buffer zone between the Russian Federation and NATO.
Ukrainian Ambassador to the United States Valeriy Chaly stated this in an interview with Evropeyskaya Pravda, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Expert discussions have already begun regarding whether Ukraine will maintain the Euro-Atlantic course in the future. American experts started asking me about this a few months ago, due to statements made by politicians in Ukraine in the context of the presidential and parliamentary elections. Some say that we need to introduce neutrality, others say that we cannot conflict with Russia forever, they say, “let’s look for a solution.” They heard it overseas,” the diplomat said.
According to him, due to such statements, there will be no encouraging news for Ukraine from the United States about the prospects for NATO membership until the results of the presidential and parliamentary elections.
The publication asked whether it is possible to say with confidence that the president and parliament elected next year are guaranteed to maintain the Euro-Atlantic course.
The ambassador said that he sees only two potential candidates who are ready to continue the clear course towards NATO membership and interaction with the IMF, although he did not specify who he had in mind.
“Everyone else is very careful about this and chooses other slogans. Perhaps – for a voter from the East of Ukraine. And their statements are heard in Washington. Even if at some closed meetings this or that politician or potential candidate for the presidency assures the opposite, then his or her campaigning, actions, and previous decisions are very seriously analyzed. That’s why I see the risk of returning to the status of a buffer state, a gray zone between NATO and Russia,” Chaly laments.
“And I am convinced that it was precisely this stay in the “gray zone” between Russia and NATO that led us to war with Russia,” he added. – If we want peace and not war, we need to join the collective security system as quickly as possible. But if Ukrainian politicians say the opposite, then firstly, the West is unlikely to support such politicians.”
