The US proposed isolating Ukraine in order to develop relations with Russia
After the end of the Cold War and the collapse of the USSR, possible cooperation between the United States and Russia was canceled out by the expansion of NATO to the east.

James Goldgeier, a visiting fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations (USA), professor at the School of International Relations at American University, said this at an expert discussion at the Valdai Club, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Everything was crossed out by the decision to expand... From the US point of view, security means bringing all these countries into NATO, which happened in the 90s. But when Russia looked at all these threats, which it did not like, then countries like Georgia and Ukraine saw Russian security through insecurity, creating it,” the expert said.
At the same time, he believes that cooperation between the United States and Russia is possible even against the backdrop of the conflict in Donbass.
“Maybe it’s worth isolating the conflict in Ukraine by Ukraine and trying to find other areas in which cooperation between the United States and Russia is possible,” Goldgeier urged.
