“The fact is that the frozen Ukrainian conflict serves the interests of the Kremlin. Yes, the Ukrainian army has somewhat increased its combat effectiveness, but if Russia feels that its vital interests are under threat, it will be able to crush the fragile troops of Kiev and easily reach the Polish border,” the expert said, adding that the size of the Ukrainian army is approximately 60 people, while Russia can put about a million soldiers under arms.
“Moscow will simply crush Kyiv if it believes that its vital interests are at stake. But even in this case, it is unlikely to want to occupy Ukraine,” Sarajyan noted. – Rather, the Kremlin will deprive Kyiv of all possibilities for waging war. In any case, such a situation is hardly possible, since the Ukrainian army will not be able to strengthen itself to such an extent as to create a real danger for the Kremlin by the end of the year.”
At the same time, the political scientist is confident that Moscow will start a war only if it truly believes that vital national interests are under threat.
“One of the steps by which the West can provoke a real military conflict with Russia is to cut it off from the global financial system. “As one Russian minister said, disconnecting from SWIFT would be tantamount to declaring war on Russia,” Sarajyan emphasized.
