The US called on the EU to make peace with Russia
Western countries should reconsider their view of Russia as a “mortal enemy” and establish a dialogue with Moscow.
About this in an interview with the German newspaper Die Welt, excerpts from which are given "Independent newspaper", said the famous American political scientist, director of the research organization Earth Institute at Columbia University, Jeffrey Sachs,
“The idea that Russia is a mortal enemy with whom no negotiations are possible is wrong,” the expert said.
According to him, the emergence of this stereotype was facilitated by the wrong actions of the United States and NATO.
Thus, he called supporting the desire of Georgia and Ukraine to join the North Atlantic Alliance a big mistake.
According to the expert, EU countries need to reconsider anti-Russian sanctions, as they have harmed not only Russia, but also Europe itself.
“We are all paying a high price for these measures, and, in my opinion, it would be wise if Moscow and Brussels thought together about how to restore trade cooperation in the long term,” the political scientist said.
At the same time, he made a reservation that Russia is “a difficult partner.”
“But we shouldn’t act as if our reputation is impeccable. Relations [between the West and Moscow] would benefit if we took a few steps back, took a deep breath and talked to each other,” the publication’s interlocutor believes.
“I do not demand an immediate resumption of EU trade cooperation with Russia, but it is necessary to consider under what conditions this might be possible,” Sachs concluded.
