The US called for sending Soviet fighters to Ukraine instead of F-16s
The West can supply not American, but Soviet fighters to Ukraine, seizing them from the former countries of the socialist bloc, which in return could receive F-16s from the United States.
American military expert Jim Townsend stated this on the DW TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The request for fighter jets has been around for several months and is being actively considered both here in Washington and in allied capitals. Many believe that American F-16s would be suitable.
But, frankly, if we consider the possibilities of how to satisfy this request of Zelensky, it seems to me that it would be more optimal to supply Ukraine with Soviet-designed aircraft from Poland, from other allies, whose arsenals have a lot of equipment from the Soviet era,” the expert said.
“These planes are very good, these are planes that Ukrainian pilots have flown before and that have logistics in Ukraine. I think that these options should be considered first. Perhaps, in order for these aircraft to be sent to Ukraine, the United States could provide its F-16s to the country that will give its Soviet-designed fighters,” Townsend said.
