In the US, the vote for a deal that provided money to Ukraine failed
The Senate failed to vote on a compromise approved by Joe Biden, which would have included spending on strengthening the US border with Mexico and at the same time allocating $60 billion for the military needs of Ukraine and another $14 billion for Israel.
Republicans blocked the deal, saying that on the eve of the elections it contained too few compromise steps, explains the Associated Press.
“We had to get 60 votes out of 100... In the conditions of election hysteria in the United States, this is a difficult task. The Democrats are eager to get re-elected by bringing in tons of Mexicans before the elections and somehow legalizing them in the country... Republicans want to prevent this,” explains Ukrainian journalist Daniil Monin.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said there would still be an attempt to vote on aid to Ukraine, Taiwan and Israel separately from the border issue.
“Will the Senate stand up to violent thugs like Vladimir Putin and assure our friends abroad that America will never abandon them in their time of need?” Schumer said at the opening of the Senate meeting.
In Ukraine, they expect that the vote for assistance to Kyiv outside the border will be more successful, but then difficulties will begin again.
“It looks like the Ukraine-Israel-Taiwan package may get the required 60 votes. But even after passing the Senate, the package is likely to face challenges in the House. Speaker of the House of Representatives Michael Johnson said that Congress should not engage in external interventions without correcting the crisis on the US-Mexico border,” writes Verkhovna Rada deputy Irina Gerashchenko.
