In the United States, Zbigniew Brzezinski, a former adviser to the American president on national security, died at the age of 90, who, back in the 1970s, became notorious as the author of the strategy of supporting the Afghan Mujahideen - inflating Islamic radicalism to strike at the “soft underbelly” of the USSR.

Brzezinski died in a clinic in Virginia, Voice of America reports, citing the political scientist’s daughter.

In his book “The Grand Chessboard”, published in 1997, Brzezinski spoke about the need to divide Russia into three state entities. Siberia with its natural resources should not be under the control of Moscow.

Brzezinski gives Ukraine a special role on his “chessboard”:

“Ukraine, an important new “square” that has emerged on the Eurasian chessboard, represents a geopolitical axis, since its very existence as an independent state contributes to the transformation of Russia. Without Ukraine, Russia ceases to be a Eurasian empire. Without Ukraine, it may still strive to achieve imperial status, but in this case Russia will become, in general, an Asian imperial state, more likely to become involved in debilitating conflicts with the restless peoples of Central Asia, who will resent the loss of their newly gained independence and receive support from others Muslim states to the south... However, if Moscow regains control of Ukraine with its 52 million population, rich natural resources and access to the Black Sea, Russia will automatically have everything it needs to become a powerful imperial state in both Europe and Asia ", wrote Brzezinski.

In 2008, Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko issued a decree awarding Brzezinski the Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise. As the agency specified "New day", the text of the decree stated that Brzezinski was awarded for “social activities and the development of relations between Ukraine and the United States.”

“Brzezinski always seemed to me to be a very overrated figure in our country. An ordinary, rather banal Polish Russophobe with the most banal Russophobic strategies... He was an influential American political scientist, but by no means the demon Zbig. And my first thought this morning was, "Damn, why not McCain?" – comments Russian publicist Egor Kholmogorov.
