The confrontation between Russia and the United States is being used by China, which intends to get a big jackpot in Europe. Mark Pfeifle, former deputy national security adviser to President George W. Bush, writes about this in the American publication The National Interest. сообщает Kiev online newspaper “Strana”.

“While the country was focused on the American President's tweets and the First Lady's shoes, a geopolitical shift was occurring in Europe that should scare the living daylights out of us. While no one was paying much attention, China has significantly expanded its military and economic power in Eastern Europe,” the material says.

According to the author, “at stake is a critical region on which the United States depends for trade and geopolitical support and which acts as a buffer against both Russia and China.”

Pfeifle emphasizes that the Chinese have done little to stop North Korea's march toward a nuclear missile. Moreover, they have already acquired a significant stake in the Greek port of Piraeus.

“As you read this, they are also working hard to secure assets in the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland, including contracts to build nuclear power plants,” the expert continues.

“Unlike the Russians, whose nuclear development programs typically rely on a relatively benign intergovernmental borrowing scheme to finance construction but leave control to local governments, China insists on both capital controls and operational controls,” the article says.

As a result, China has complete control of critical infrastructure, which gives it leverage in the region comparable only to what Moscow had during the Cold War, the author writes.

“What is happening is that China is exploiting the geopolitical standoff between Russia and the United States to acquire ownership and control of critical parts of the energy infrastructure. This tactic has already given China an “energy belt” that stretches from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea: critical parts of the infrastructure of Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Poland, Romania and Slovakia have actually come under Chinese control,” the article notes.

“Our approach must be more nuanced: we must move away from a policy of indiscriminate containment and towards a strategy that allows Russian projects to proceed, provided they are not detrimental to European energy security and US security concerns,” Pfeifle concludes.
