US Secretary of the Army Mark Esper at the end of June replaced acting head of the Pentagon Patrick Shanahan, who had held this post since the beginning of 2019 due to the resignation of the former head of the department, James Mattis.
On July 15, US President Donald Trump introduced Mark Esper's candidacy to the upper house of Congress, and on July 19 it was approved by the Senate Armed Services Committee.
