The collapse in which Republican presidential candidate Hillary Clinton fell has aggravated the question in American society of what will happen if one of the candidates does not survive or becomes incapacitated before the elections on November 8, writes Kommersant.

“There is no simple and direct answer,” the publication points out. —If misfortune befalls the Republican nominee, the national committee will fill the vacancy either by calling a new convention or by a vote of state delegates. If a tragedy occurs in the Democratic camp, then the party’s national committee will also step in, although the procedure for its actions in such a development of events is not clearly described.”
“Real problems can begin if the winning candidate dies immediately after the election,” the newspaper continues. – According to US law, the name of the new president is named by the Electoral College, which represents the participants in the race in a number proportional to the number of votes cast. If the winner dies before the body meets in mid-December, then the party leadership will present the name of who will replace the winner of the race.
Re-elections will not be held in this case. The party assumes that the electors will support the proposed candidate. That person would then have to be confirmed by Congress. If the winner dies after the Electoral College meets, then again lawmakers will need to decide whether to consider him the elected president. If the decision is positive, the country will be led by a new vice president.”
At the same time, the publication states that it is difficult to predict the development of events, since there have been no such precedents in American history, and the described mechanisms are not enshrined in any specific law.
It is worth noting that this is not the first time that Hillary Clinton has shown obvious signs of ill health in public and lost consciousness.
