The US became nervous about Germany's anti-American bias
The German government is poised to renege on its commitment to increase military spending in the latest gesture of defiance from Chancellor Angela Merkel against President Donald Trump.
An influential business newspaper writes about this The Wall Street Journal.
“These German actions add to tensions in transatlantic relations, which have been steadily deteriorating since Donald Trump took office. In recent months, Berlin has stubbornly resisted pressure from the Trump administration to stop construction of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline because it would increase Russian gas supplies to Germany.
“NATO members are committed to moving closer to the 2024% target by 2, not further away from it. The fact that the German government is thinking about reducing the already unacceptably low costs of combat readiness is an alarming signal for the country’s 28 NATO allies,” the publication quotes US Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell as saying.
In addition, the newspaper notes that the reduction in military appropriations also means that Germany is unlikely to buy American aircraft to service the American nuclear arsenal located on its territory, as reported by politicians from the coalition parties.
