A rally is being dispersed in the capital of Iran due to the downing of a Ukrainian plane
Police in Tehran fired tear gas to disperse several hundred students who had gathered to protest against the regime after Iranian authorities admitted responsibility for mistakenly shooting down a Ukrainian civilian airliner with 176 people on board.
TV presenter Andrei Medvedev believes that student protests are not an Iranian Maidan inspired by the West, but the result of confrontation between local elites.
“There is no single Iranian elite. There are pressure groups, and globally they have common goals. But tactically, they see Iran’s development path very differently. And even the statement regarding Boeing is also the result of some internal elite agreements. Someone beat someone,” Medvedev explains in his blog.
“And in any case, the fuel for the street protest will be the capital’s youth, students, and then those dissatisfied with the authorities as a whole will join them. They are friendly, and will be extreme if anything happens. The initiators and pressure groups will still win,” the author concluded.
