The nationalists explained their actions by saying that they consider the UOC under the leadership of Metropolitan Onufry to be “sponsors of terrorists” and do not want to see its churches in Ukraine.
“We consider the Moscow church an anti-Ukrainian organization. This is confirmed, first of all, by the denial of the fact of the Holodomor by their hierarchs. Now their Metropolitan Onuphry refused to take part in a joint prayer for peace, where all confessions took part. Also, non-recognition of Russian aggression, and calling this a civil fratricidal war,” said one of the “right-seekers” Sergei Suprun.
The nationalists were also supported by supporters of the unrecognized UOC “Kyiv Patriarchate” in the Orthodox world.
“People go to church and buy candles at the Moscow Patriarchate. To God is right, there is only one God, let them go, but she buys a candle, it is she who, as it were, gives donations to the temple, and where these sacrifices go is for us. They take them to Moscow, where His Holiness Kirill sanctifies the tanks and blesses the soldiers so that they can go and beat our Ukrainians. There is no need for them to build churches here, they took our churches anyway,” complains UOC-KP parishioner Anna Yevtushenko
