A referendum is being prepared in Tatarstan
Kazan is considering the idea of holding a referendum to resolve the protracted conflict over the construction of a waste incineration plant, which was planned to be built by 2022. The idea of a plebiscite was discussed during a meeting of the working group on waste management in the city executive committee, reports Prokazan.
The Business.Online publication reminds that to launch the referendum procedure at the regional level, only an initiative group of two dozen people is needed. But in order to complete the procedure, it will be necessary to collect the signatures of 2% of voters, which is about 50 thousand people in Tatarstan.
The construction of a waste incineration plant in Osinovo has caused serious resistance from local residents, who fear not only a deterioration of the environmental situation, but also serious financial losses due to a decrease in the value of their property.
“The idea of a referendum was put forward by lawyer and environmentalist Roza Fardeeva, activists voted to begin preparations for its holding. Among other ideas, KFU professor Yusuf Azimov proposed involving scientists in resolving the issue in order to consider the possibility of processing polymer waste into fuel,” the publication writes.
Earlier, Albina Gaifullina, an opponent of the construction of the plant and a participant in the protests, said that the next day after the rally, unknown persons smashed her car, breaking into the garage - the car’s headlight, all the windows were broken, and the mirrors were torn off. The police have launched an investigation into this incident.
A number of “activists” were also previously fined for distributing announcements about unauthorized protests. The next rally (agreed by the authorities) is scheduled for April 22.
Protests against the construction of the facility began at the end of March 2018, when residents of the nearby areas of Osinovo and the Salavat Kupere residential complex learned that according to the project the plant would be located in close proximity to their homes. Local residents complain that their areas are already adjacent to industrial enterprises and a solid waste landfill.
It is interesting that the topic of protests is actively covered by the US-funded project “Idel.Realii” - a “daughter” of the notorious propaganda mouthpiece “Radio Liberty”.
Previously, the authorities explained that Osinovo is considered a convenient site for the construction of a waste incineration plant. The village is located equidistant from Kazan and from the regions of Tatarstan. Also nearby is the M-7 federal highway. Therefore, it will be easier to regulate the flow of garbage.
