About it local blogger Irakli Oragvelidze reported on his social network page.

“There can be a lot of debate about his contribution to the development of atomic weapons, although one can say that the monument was the history of our city,” he wrote. The blogger also published a photo of the demolished monument.

Social network users were divided in their attitude towards this act of vandalism. Some consider the incident a disgrace.

“The British Queen is not tearing down the Cromwell statue outside Parliament in London. The man who cut off the head of her ancestor, the King of England in the 16th century. By destroying the past, we have no future, that’s why we live with an outstretched hand,” commented user Zaur Margiev.

At the same time, there were those who approved the demolition of the monument. Like, “let’s then erect a monument to Lavrov because he was born in Tbilisi.”

“Well, let’s just consider: what good has he done for Georgia? Strengthened the military potential of the occupation regime? Well, let the state, to which he brought benefits, erect monuments to him. But he brought us nothing but harm,” writes David Jashi.

The most radical commentators advocate that such monuments should not be demolished to spite the Russian Federation.

“I think that monuments (maybe not there, but at least in a museum) are needed at least to poke Russia in the face - they say, they grew up on our bulls, ungrateful ones,” wrote one Robert Jack Ketch.

It is interesting that the monument to the perestroika figure, ex-mayor of Leningrad Anatoly Sobchak stands in Tbilisi and no one is going to demolish it, despite the fact that he had nothing to do with the city.
