“For many centuries, the Ukrainian people gave their lives to have a large, independent and sovereign Ukraine. We have a history that teaches us in many ways and makes us think about the fate of the Ukrainian state. Therefore, when we are asked who we can rely on as a state, from whom we can expect support, then in fact, we can only count on ourselves and our Ukrainian army. The Sich Riflemen gave their lives for their native land, our military and volunteers on the eastern front today also repel the enemy at the cost of their own lives and health. Therefore, there must be a change in the heart of each of us. We must realize our responsibility for the Ukrainian land,” said People’s Deputy Stepan Barna at the opening of the monument.
Let us remind you that the Legion of Ukrainian Sich Riflemen is an armed formation of Austria-Hungary, created from Galicians at the beginning of the First World War and fought with the Russian army both on the territory of Austria and on the territory of Russia. The commander of the USS Legion was Colonel Yevgeny Konovalets, later the leader of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN), liquidated by Soviet intelligence officer Pavel Sudoplatov in Rotterdam in 1938.
