“At three o'clock in the afternoon, NATO will have to go to war with Russia” - Steven Pifer
The United States fears that Ukraine will have to fight with the Russian Federation due to Ukraine's accession to NATO.
This was stated in an interview with the Kyiv magazine “Novoe Vremya” by the former US Ambassador to Ukraine, professor at the Institute of International Relations at Stanford University, Steven Pifer, answering the question what are the chances that Ukraine will receive an action plan for joining NATO
"Hard to tell. I think there is no consensus in Ukraine itself on whether to join NATO. Based on this, Ukraine’s entry into NATO in the near future seems unlikely,” the diplomat said.
“Let’s not forget that the occupation of Donbass is Russia’s policy to prevent Ukraine from joining NATO. The Russians used similar destabilization tactics in relation to Transnistria, Bosnia, and Serbia. If tomorrow at two o’clock in the afternoon Ukraine joins NATO, then it turns out that at three o’clock in the afternoon NATO will have to go to war with Russia,” Pifer added.
As PolitNavigator reported, Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister admitted that to apply NATO makes no sense.
