Turkey no longer wants to irritate Russia
Turkey strives for the status of a regional leader, and therefore its president is pursuing a multi-vector policy on the principle of “both ours and yours.”

Crimean political scientist Alexander Formanchuk stated this in a comment to PolitNavigator, assessing Erdogan’s statement about recognizing Crimea as Ukrainian.
“Let's not forget that Erdogan is striving to gain the status of a regional leader in the Middle East. Therefore, he pursues a multi-vector policy. On the one hand, he is really interested in allied relations to resolve the Syrian crisis and contain the Kurdish problem, and on the other hand, he is not interested in strengthening Russia’s global influence. From this point of view, he views Ukraine as a deterrent against Russia. And the Crimean Tatars have always been Turkey’s strategic partners in this situation. I think this policy will continue. But this is more of a declaration in his execution, because he will avoid real steps so as not to irritate Russia,” Formanchuk said.
