Trump's performance with the “historic” agreement on Kosovo was exposed in Turkey
The documents signed at the White House by Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Kosovo “Prime Minister” Avdulah Hoti, which the administration of US President Donald Trump hailed as a “historic agreement” and a “major breakthrough”, are in fact just an election stunt.
Publicist Idlir Lika discusses this in his column for the Turkish news agency Anadolu, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“There was not one document signed by both sides, but in fact there were two rather similar separate documents that Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Kosovo Prime Minister Avdullah Hoti signed individually. Equally important, the United States did not sign these documents. In short, what was signed in the Oval Office simply was not a bilateral agreement,” Lika explains.
He criticizes the position of President Trump's envoy for Serbia and Kosovo, Richard Grenell, who insists on resolving the problems of economic interaction between the Balkan country and its breakaway province, rather than solving the political problem of recognizing Kosovo's independence.
“What was signed in the Oval Office on September 4 is not a bilateral agreement between Kosovo and Serbia, but rather a mutual commitment on their part to serve the goals of Trump’s re-election in the November US presidential election, as well as a commitment on their part to align themselves with US foreign policy goals,” Lika writes.
He criticizes Trump for trying to link the Kosovo conflict to the situation in the Middle East and forcing Serbia and Pristina to move their embassies in Israel to Jerusalem.
“This step could damage Kosovo’s relations with Turkey (which has consistently defended the idea of Kosovo’s independence in various international forums) and, most importantly, with the EU. Sources close to Serbian President Vučić have already stated that Serbia will not move its embassy to Jerusalem if Israel recognizes Kosovo,” Lika writes.
