This data was provided by the Deputy Chairman of the State Agency of Ukraine for Film Affairs Sergei Neretin.
“Given the realities of today, we would like to spend the whole year ensuring that we have as many mass films as possible. That is, so that the viewer goes to cinemas specifically for Ukrainian films. After all, now the screens are mostly American blockbusters, not even Russian ones, which, by the way, have lost demand. At the end of 2016, there was only 6% of the repertoire of Russian films. And three years ago – about 20%. A niche has appeared that needs to be filled with something,” Neretin said.
According to him, all the experiments over the past two or three years have shown that mass audiences do not go to see poetic, auteur cinema.
“This is a trend not only in Ukraine, but throughout the world. And in order to satisfy the demand of the mass audience and at the same time demonstrate that Ukraine is a cinematic state, we will do everything to ensure that mass cinema appears in cinemas as much as possible. The results of 2016 showed that there is a demand for it,” the official said.
