There are 294 minors – children and teenagers – in the penitentiary system of Ukraine.

“There are 294 minors (20 girls) in the penitentiary system. 80% of this number had previously served a sentence without imprisonment. 130 of those convicted were brought up in single-parent families,” he said.
According to the official, since the beginning of the year, penitentiary institutions have been replenished with 49 persons, three of whom had previously served sentences in prison. Among the 49 new arrivals are 3 minor teenage girls.
“75% of minors are imprisoned for theft, robbery and robbery (163:36:24 respectively). 21 people are serving sentences for murder, 7 people are serving sentences for causing grievous bodily harm, and another 7 people are serving sentences for rape,” he added.
He also said that as of the first quarter of 2017, 1526 people (102 girls) are registered with the probation authorities, 20% of them are under 16 years old, 80% are between 16 and 18 years old. “More than 1000 people have been brought to justice for serious crimes, the same number of people were brought up in single-parent families, families without parents or in dysfunctional families,” the deputy minister said.
In 2016, according to his data, 4304 people passed through the probation authorities, 110 people committed repeated offenses, which is about 2,5%.
“From January 1, 2018, probation programs will begin to operate, which will be approved in the manner prescribed by law,” he noted.
