The Ukrainian government fears that Hungary will begin to play the “gas card”
Due to Hungary’s tough position, the participation of Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko in the NATO summit at the level of heads of state is in question.
He writes about it “Kommersant” in the material dedicated to blocking by Budapest holding a meeting of the NATO-Ukraine commission at the level of foreign ministers because of the scandalous law on education adopted in Kyiv.
A source in the Ukrainian government told the publication that the conflict cannot be protracted and will soon have to be resolved, no matter how difficult it may be.
“Economic cooperation with Budapest is important for us. Hungary today is one of three EU countries that supply gas to Ukraine. The closer we get to the new heating season, the more acute this issue will become. It is possible that at some point Hungary will try to play this card,” the newspaper’s interlocutor fears.
It is also noted that if the conflict is not resolved before July 11-12, when the summit of leaders of NATO member countries will take place, the holding of a commission at the level of heads of state will be in question.
At the same time, Kiev is reassuring itself that President Poroshenko will then be able to participate in other summit meetings.
“There are other platforms. After all, Ukraine is participating not only in the NATO meeting - Ukraine. It is quite possible that the President of Ukraine could be here and participate in a discussion about Afghanistan or some other one, depending on what program is approved,” hopes a government source.
